Dachshund internet adverts: “Buyer beware!”

It’s not unusual for us to be sent details of adverts from internet puppy sales sites where people are worried about the dogs being advertised.  Their two main concerns are puppies from parents that have not been health-tested, or Double-Dapple puppies.

Our guidance for puppies buyers is simple in relation to these two concerns:

  • ALL Miniatures should be DNA screened for cord1 PRA before breeding (unless they are recorded by the KC as Hereditary Clear) and at least one of the parents MUST have been tested Clear
  • ALL  Miniature Wires should be DNA screened for Lafora Disease before breeding (unless they are recorded by the KC as Hereditary Clear) and at least one of the parents MUST have been tested Clear
  • Do not buy a Dachshund with large patches of white. It may be Double-Dapple with sight and hearing problems

What are the warning signs in internet adverts?

Composite advert 2

  • Delivery can be arranged – ALWAYS visit the puppies in their home and make sure you SEE MUM
  • The cross-breeding of the three coats and two sizes is not permitted by the UK Kennel Club
  • Rare colours” – watch out for health problems and rip-off prices
  • Two (or more) litters available at the same time – is this a commercial breeder?  Ask how many litters they breed per year.  If they breed more than 4 litters p.a. they will need a Local Authority Breeding Licence
  • Would you buy from someone who can’t even spell Dachshund (or Miniature, or Standard)?

Please read our “Buying a Dachshund” pages.   Quite often, when we investigate, we find the pedigrees of these puppies are works of fiction with puppies being registered with colours that would be genetically impossible from the stated parents.  Where we are able to obtain substantial evidence, we report these cases to the Kennel Club for investigation and follow-up.

Of course, it’s perfectly possible that these types of advert are from people breeding good quality Dachshunds, but the message is “Do your homework“.
