Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 28/6/17

The sun certainly had his hat on for Border Union & The Miniature Dachshund Club & fingers crossed will be with us for a while, we may even get a summer that lasts with three days where temperatures went over 30 degrees this must be some kind of record! To my mind this must be the first time in years that Border Union has been so lucky weather wise, a beautiful venue & a really lovely drive for those not in a hurry to appreciate it.

For our varieties just Min Longs have CCs on offer & Mandy Dance (Emem Min Wires) judged 55 on the day awarding The BCC, BOB & BP to Lynn Brooks’ Lyndarlea Vienna with The RBCC going to Fran Mitchell’s Bronia First Impression who is also a puppy attending her first show. DCC was Roy Wood’s puppy Wildstar Wrobinson with Helen Buchan & Pauline Kerslake’s Devonwood Crackerjack At Helenium taking the RDCC.

Longs without CCs where judged by Christine Russell (Russteck Min Wires & Min smooths). From the 12 dogs on the day Helen Geeson handled both Best of Sex winners for Mother Janet. BB & BOB was Ch Abydachs Giving Off Sparks with BD going to Abydachs seize The Night. RBD was Ken & Sandra Paskins’ Kindeace Micky Mars with RBB & BP going to Emily Mitchell’s Bronia Supernatural who went onto top The Hound Puppy Group under Pam Marston-Pollock (Falconcrag Whippets & Wire Dachshunds). Emily returned on the final day with her baby but unfortunately didn’t go any further & from what I gather a very late finish too with four groups & four puppy groups to get through before the final awards.

The following day, still in sunshine The Miniature DC held its open show at Roade Village Hall. I gather all went well with the show & at The Club’s AGM which followed.Val Philips (Tendrow Wires) awarded Best In Show to Lisa Muggleton’s Min Smooth Mosiarto Mister Valentino JW with Reserve Best In Show & Best Puppy In Show going to Trevor, Stephanie & Jeremy Goddard’s Min Long Westwillow A Touch Of magic at Minard. Best Veteran In Show was Anne Johnson’s Min Long Ch charpurdy Just Iss.

How lovely to see Ian & Lesley Negus (Tarramist Longs) have recently celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary. Who would have guessed?, congratulations to Ian for surviving 40 years!. You both looked so happy on recent photographs & I hope you celebrated in style. Lets hope you have many more happy years together & continue producing good quality Longs.

Michael Lewis had a good day with his Longs at Chepstow & DCS Open Show. Trixhund Black Opium was Hound Puppy Group Three under Caroline Friend-Rees (Amical Siberian’s) & his old girl Bronia Sweet amber At Trixhund went Best Veteran In Show under Shelia Jakeman (Tanlap Chow Chows).

It’s certainly heart breaking to lose a beloved pet & lifelong companion. It’s with great sadness to hear that The Min Long Ch Minard Krystal Darque has left us shortly before her 16th birthday. You can’t imagine how devastated The Minard household is at this moment in time. Trevor, Stephanie & Jeremy Goddard’s Record Breaking girl certainly hit the very high spots through her illustrious life & came from an exceptional litter that contained two other Champion Sisters too. Born on August 17th 2001 by Ruth Lockett- Walters’ Ralines Royal Spartan (Ch ralines Spartan at Ridgegrove x Ch Ralines Royal Acclaim) out of Mullion Bensons Lilly of Minard (Ch Minard Smiths Gold x Mullion Aquarius Apparition) a total of 71 CCs where awarded to Krystal giving her the overall CC winning record for any variety of Dachshund in the UK, all but one (Crufts) coming from different judges. The three important qualifying CCs where all awarded in 2003 by Nora Winterbourne (Maundowne Min Longs) at Crufts , Billy Mee (Barlaines Min Longs) at The NCDA & her title at Blackpool by Dorothy Hanney (Bronia Dachshunds). In 2004 Krystal won the very first Dachshund Of the Year event under Liz Cartlidge repeating this success in 2006 under Simon Parsons. Krystal’s career reads like a good novel, BOB at Crufts 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2008, Multiple Best In Show’s at breed clubs, awarded The Jackdaw Trophy by The DC for most oustanding Dachshund in 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2008, Top Hound all breeds in 2005 & runner up Top Hound all breeds in 2004 with four hound group wins, three group 2, three group 3 & two group 4 awards with highlights including Reserve Best In Show at The LKA in 2005 under Margaret Everton (Impton Great Danes) & Group two at Crufts in 2008 under Zola Rawson (Mumtaz Saluki’s). It certainly wasn’t all glitz & glamour though as Krystal did a disappearing act going walkabouts for three days as youngster near the family home in Leicestershire being recovered safe & well thanks to the help of many Dachshund friends from near & far. Her Champion Siblings where Ian Blackshaw’s Ch Minard She’s A Peach At Ravenways who gained her title in 2006 with her qualifying CCs from Jean Hallet (Loretto Min Wires), Dorothy Hanney who awarded Krystal her third CC & Roy Metcalfe (Metadale Dachshunds). The Goddard’s own Ch Minard A Girl like Me won her three CCs from all rounder Jean Lanning, Mike Caple (Morsefield Min Wires & Beagles) & her third as a veteran under Sallyann Elkington (Sutina Min Wires) proving what lasting quality this kennel has produced. At some point I’m sure most of you will have seen Krystal in action & I’m sure you will join me in sending our sympathy to Trevor, Stephanie & Jeremy at this extremly sad time as another chapter in our history book closes but with records & memories that will stay for a lifetime I’m sure.
