Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 12/7/17

My spies tell me that East Of England had a lovely sunny day with Dachshund judging taking place inside one of the buildings. Ken Sinclair (Araki Tibetan Terriers) judged both our varieties with CCs on offer. From 37 Longs judged on the day the BCC (her first) & BOB was Cindy Dare’s Darsoms Zeunice who also made the final cut in the group under Liz Cartledge (Ryslip). DCC (his third) was Fran Mitchell’s Bronia True Legacy with Sue Burke & Rosie Manston’s Wardax Indian Summer By Bonavoir taking the RDCC. The RBCC was Janet Geeson’s Ch Abydachs Giving Off Sparks handled by daughter Helen. BP was Michael Lewis’ Trixhund Black Opium with Glenda Marks taking Best Veteran with ch Brynalyn Royal warrior Via Labbadax ShCM.

Ken had 76 Min Longs to judge awarding the DCC, BOB & BP to Roy Wood’s Wildstar Wrobinson who went onto Group Three under Liz Cartledge & Hound Puppy Group Two under Sarah Hattrell (Khinjan Schnauzers, Afghans, Pugs & Lhasa Apsos) . RDCC was Chris Barnsdale & Kim Hayward-Barnsdale’s Chriskim’s Trail Blazer. Edward Allen was awarded his first ever CC in Dachshunds (although as most of you will know Edward has handled & won many top awards with many top winning Terriers) with his homebred bitch Penparc Creme Caramel. The RBCC was Lynne Bell’s Tolberg Legally Blonde JW & best veteran was Pauline Kerslake’s Devonwood Lady Alexandra.

At Leeds, Helen Caple (Morsefield Mini Wires & Beagles) will be awarding CCs in Longs for the first time & has attracted an entry of 35 dogs. Min Longs don’t have CCs on offer but Jane Maxwell (Bardrestan Spinone’s & Wire Dachshunds) has attracted a very good entry of 33 dogs

Ken & Sandra Paskins had another good day, this time at The Hound Association of Scotland where their Long Abydachs Summer Dream At Kindeace ShCM went Best Veteran In Show under David Knights (Lelaps Whippets). Gail, Cari & Dave Hutton’s Long Dachalune Annysia was Hound Group Two at Goosnargh & Longridge open show.

Most of you will be aware that Janet Geeson’s (Abydachs Longs) ‘other’ daughter is a fully qualified Airline Pilot. Judith has been flying for many years across the globe but it was in Manchester last week where Judith’s aircraft was involved with a bomb scare. You really can’t imagine how Janet & her family must have been feeling as the hours ticked by waiting for the situation to be resolved. A controlled explosion took place & thankfully all the crew & passengers were safe. Even for the crew it must have been extremely difficult to keep a plane full of worried passengers calm in a situation like this. It really doesn’t bear thinking about. For Judith & her crew the whole event took 14 hours to resolve which must have been horrendous. Relief all round for everyone. Most of us have now encountered Charley, Judith’s daughter at some of our shows who certainly has taken an interest in Nana Janet & Aunty Helen’s Longs & indeed even at a very young age is now a member of The Young Kennel Club & a very capable Dachshund handler. Maybe a life in dogs could be a little less tense than those of an Airline Pilot!

Over the weekend the sad news reached everyone that Percy Norton (Matzell Smooths) had left us. At an amazing 103 years of age it goes without saying that Percy was an absolute wealth of knowledge from all walks of life. Certainly the longest-standing member of the Eastern Counties Dachshund Association where his daughter Marilyn is Vice President. Goodness knows how many champions Percy has seen through time, to sit & chat with him was always a pleasure, encouraging, positive & extremely funny at times. Never negative, we all found a Percy to be a great supporter of Dachshunds, a true devotee to our breed. Yet another familiar face we will all miss seeing around our little family gatherings most weeks. To Marilyn & the rest of Percy’s family, you are certainly all in our thoughts right now.
