The first weekend in August now seems a little crazy for most of us. Not just for Dachshunds but for those lucky enough to own other breeds, especially across the seven groups.
It all started for us with the Hound Show & as usual we all received a very warm & friendly welcome by everyone. A new ring area for all Dachshunds was tried this year & proved really successful. The weather battled against the elements & remained dry until around 1 pm when the downpour that had been threatening all morning certainly came down extremely quickly & in an abundance.
Both our varieties have CCs on offer with Wendell Moore (Cloudside Afghan Hounds & Wire Dachshunds) attracting 54 Longs on the day. DCC & BOB was Fran Mitchell’s Ch Bronia True Legacy with Zara Boyle’s Ch Zarcrest Hugo Boss taking the RDCC. BCC (her first) was Daniel Roberts’ Swansford Gemmadora with Lesley McNaughton’s Cedavoch Circe taking the RBCC. Best Veteran was Ken & Sandra Paskins’ Ch Abydachs Summer Dream At Kindeace who went onto Veteran Group Three under former Hound Association Secretary & Whippet specialist Shirly Rawlings.
Carole Worswick (Dolyharp Min Longs & Min Smooths) judged 81 Min Longs on the day awarding the BCC & BOB to Linda Brown’s Ch Mystera Once Upon A Dream at Garbosa. DCC (his third) was Lynn Brooks’ Lyndarlea Just Andy with the RDCC going to Mrs Mourton’s Eldmour Cinnamon Spice who was also Best Puppy. The RBCC was awarded to Lynne Bell’s Tolberg Legally Blonde JW ShCM handled as usual by Adam Rowell. Hannah Woodvine-Shone won Best Veteran with Ir Ch Hanishan Classic Landing.
The Midland DC staged its championship show for the second year running alongside the Hound Show & the comments & feedback on this year’s set up was greatly received. A year’s worth of planning & once again several days spent at the showground prior to both events certainly showed many improvements. Already plans are being made to improve the partnership experience even more for everyone.
Jeremy Goddard (Minard Min Longs) attracted 77 Min Longs with CCs on offer awarding the DCC (his seventh but his title as this is his first CC out of puppy) to Roy Wood’s Wildstar Wrobinson who later went onto BOB. RDCC was awarded to Ruth Lockett-Walters & Helen Walters’ Ralines Royal Rebel. BCC (her first) was Emily Mitchell’s Metadale Coco Chanel of Bronia with Barbara Metcalfe’s Metadale Ariadne handled by Daughter Suzanne taking The RBCC. BP was Will Harris & Miss Mclachlan’s Zarcrest Black Smith.
Midland DC President Derek Smith decided the main awards as judge elect Gladys Mead had withdrawn due to poor health. Derek’s choice for Best In Show was Roy Wood’s new Champion Min Long Wrobinson with Chris Moes & Rhian Williams’ Smooth Cwmdarhian Hot Off The Press taking Reserve Best In Show (going one better next door just a few moments later where she was awarded Best In Show at the Hound Show!). Best Puppy In Showwas awardedd to Sue & Jason Hunt’s Min Smooth Carpaccio Midnight Lace with Lesley Mcnaughton’s Smooth Cedavoch Rainstorm taking Reserve Best Puppy In Show. Marilyn Norton’s Smooth Ch Matzell Mildred was awarded Best Veteran In Show by Ian Blackshaw (Ravenways Min Longs).
The following day Paignton held Hound day at their all breeds championship show where unfortunately neither of our varieties have CCs on offer. Jenny Hiscox (Teegate Min Wires) judged both Longs & Min Longs. From 13 Longs Jenny awarded BB & BOB to Ian & Lesley Negus’ Tarramist Krug Rose with Best Dog going to Ian & Lesley’s Tarramist Iron Man. RBD was Mel Chapman’s Melminds Zsylvester with RBB going to Sarah Eve’s Sundayshill Hermione. No puppies were entered.
From 9 Min Longs BD & BOB was Mrs Wallace’s Willowheath Rebel Rock who was also awarded BP. Mrs Dear’s Quested Creme Teddie was RBD. Mr & Mrs Broad’s Cinnamon Chi was BB with Roger & Katie Sainsbury’s Ridgegrove Constance At Boscolla taking RBB.
Schedules are out for the forthcoming West of England DA Open Show. Please note that due to a small error in the schedule that the confirmed judges are the Husband & Wife team & are judging as follows, Mrs Muriel Locksmith will judge Smooths, Longs & Min Wires with Rodney Locksmith judging Wires, Min Longs & Min Smooths. All details are available through the club’s website & Facebook page.
Len Hammond contacted me with the sad news that Dave Edwards (Barok Min Longs) has passed away after a brave battle. Husband to Babs Edwards & her greatest supporter, both being truly devoted to each other. I’m sure I speak for us all in sending Babs & their family our deepest sympathy at this very sad time.
The latest Kennel Club Breed Record Supplement has arrived containing registration details for the second quarter of 2017. Once again Min Smooths lead the whole hound group with 1,339 new registrations (1,107 for the same quarter last year). This is 193 up on the first quarter. As for Longs, 51 new registrations were received, which is one up on the first quarter. Nine new litters are recorded & with the exception of one litter that contained four chocolate & tan along with a chocolate dapple, all colours registered are black & tan or some variation of red.
In Min Longs, 89 new litters have been recorded producing 274 puppies (exactly the same number as the first quarter). The usual mixture of colour registrations, although none are registered ‘colour unknown’. A quick glance does look like the solid colours (especially black & tan) are making a comeback, thankfully. One new import from the Ukraine with niether of our varieties having any exports in this quarter. As usual a very interesting read!
