Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 4/1/18

January 4, 2018
2018 is now with us, another new year & with it comes a full calendar of shows & many educational & fun events that your clubs & many volunteers help to stage successfully for the benefit of not just the showing community, but for everyone who has an interest for Dachshunds. When I say ‘volunteers’ that’s exactly what I mean as the many people that help with such events are unpaid & give so much time so freely. Times certainly change & unfortunately, a small minority seem to complain or be vocal on social media about shows & events which are staged to benefit everyone. Sometimes it does make me wonder how many of this minority actually serve on a committee or give their time up so freely for our enjoyment. The time, detail, dedication & hard work done by many can leave a feeling of ‘why do we bother’ from complaints, statements & feedback that are not constructive. Maybe a new year resolution for some could be ‘how can I help?’ instead of ‘how can I complain?’
The first e-news of the year from the Dachshund Breed Council has arrived in our inbox & gives us news & updates that some may have missed over the festive period. Two festive fundraisers have boosted funds for the IVDD Fund, The Sausage Army calendar has raised £991 & Devoted To Dachshunds Christmas Cards raised £2,000. With more still to come from the Dachshunds Of Facebook Calendar, the IVDD fund has certainly received a boost thanks to these wonderful ideas.
A special new year offer is made to the first 10 dogs that apply to be x-rayed & screened for IVDD for just £100 thanks to the recent fundraising activities done by so many. If your Dachshund is between 24 & 48 months of age & you plan to breed from him/her, follow the link on the DBC website to obtain this special offer.
At the DC championship show, 17 Dachshunds were examined under the KC/BVA/ISDS eye screening programme by Ophthalmologist Lorna Newman. The only cause for concern from those examined was Distichiasis in Miniature Longs which was found in 85% of those examined. There were no signs of hereditary type retinal atrophy in any dog. The newsletter also contains many interesting links to Dachshund items that are currently doing the rounds on the Internet too.
Don’t forget that the Dachshund Club is staging the Dachshund of the Year 2017 on 27th January with your chance to see the top-winning Dachshunds of last year all together. All the details are on the club’s website & everyone is welcome to attend.
At Eastbourne & DCS June Sutton’s Long Damai Master Benedict went Best Veteran In Show under Ray McDonald (Roanjona Irish Red & White Setters). At Luton & DCS Lloyd Cross’s Long Glasvey Double Trouble for Loggeta won the Hound Puppy Group under Pat Dufty (Triken Whippets).
Nominations have opened for this year’s Pawscars event which, as usual, will be staged on the eve of Crufts at the Birmingham Metropole Hotel. Once again, we are blessed with a nominee that has a Dachshund background, Will Harris (Zarcrest Longs & Min Longs) has been nominated for Canine Photographer Of The Year. I’m sure that the majority of you will have seen & even had photographs done of your dogs by Will & the quality is quite outstanding. You can vote for Will through the Pawscars website & let’s hope we can get him the title of ‘Pawscars Photographer Of The Year’, a title that he so richly deserves. Many congratulations on your nomination.
This weekend we have Boston championship show on Saturday where unfortunately no CCs are on offer for any variety of Dachshund. Angie Baxter is judging all six varieties & has attracted over 180 dogs; such a fabulous entry. On Sunday, the Midland DC are hosting their education day; if you want to join in there is still time. Details are on the website or by contacting Secretary Daniel Roberts on the numbers below.

Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 12/10/17

October 12, 2017

In contrast to the week before at Driffield, a dry sunny autumn morning gave a pleasant drive through the Welsh hills to Builth Wells where The South Wales Kennel Association all breed championship show was being staged. Unlike The Welsh Kennel Club, SWKA use the top area of the showground with all judging taking place inside. It’s been a few years now scince Longs had CCs on offer although like most breeds without CCs on offer they remain classified.

Brenda Jones (Adnerb smooths) had 7 Longs on the day with litter brother & sister winning each best of sex. Daniel Roberts’ Swansford Grantador was awarded BD & BOB with Swansford Gemmadora taking BB. RBD was Sue Burke & Rosie Manston’s Wardax Indian Summer Bonavior with Michael Lewis’ Trixhund Black Opium taking RBB & BP.

Carolyn Davies (Atihara Wires) was awarding CCs in Min Longs for the first time & had 47 dogs on the day. BCC (her first) & BOB was Helen Walters’ Ralines Flirtini handled by Mum Ruth Lockett-Walters. Ruth & Helen where also awarded The RBCC & BP with Crisp Fall Night At Ralines. DCC was Lynne Brooks’ Ch Lyndarlea Just Andy JW with Christine McCarthy being awarded The RDCC with Nagshall Luca Mac.

The organisers at SWKA where certainly keen to keep the show moving & exhibitors on the road at a decent time as the Hound group was called at 2.30pm. Vivien Philips (Debucher GBGV & Wires) had the pleasure of judging the group but sadly neither of our varieties went any further in what looked like an extremely high quality group.

This weekend sees The Long Haired DC open show at Calf Heath, near Wolverhampton. The committee always go above & beyond for the exhibitor & once again offer free Tea & Coffee on arrival. Judging commences at 10am in one ring with Miniatures being judged first. All varieties are classified & the individual figures are Min Longs 8, Min Wires 8, Min smooths 20, Longs 14, Wires 11 & smooths 7. As usual the baby puppy walk will be held in between the judging of The Miniatures & Standard varieties.

Entries for the forthcoming Lancashire & Cheshire DA Championship show where both our varieties do not have CCs this year are 20 Longs & 26 Min Longs. At Midland Counties all breeds Championship show both our varieties thankfully have CCs on offer with two breed specialists attracting 37 Longs & 48 Min Longs. Midland Counties will also be a very exciting time for Fran Mitchell (Bronia Longs) who not only will be celebrating a very ‘special’ birthday but also judging her very first championship show Hound Group!

The Midland DC recently held a committee meeting where club activities for 2018 & beyond where discussed. The club are certainly keen at giving back to both the Dachshund breeder, future judge & Dachshund owner. Many exciting plans are now being finalised to benefit all with details coming by the end of the month. One date worth noting is that The Club’s Championship Show will now be held as usual in Partnership with The Hound Association at Stafford on the new date of Saturday 14th July 2018. This weekend in July will be the new permanent date going forward for both societies.

Sad news comes from The Tekalhaus home of Debbie & Peter Clarke. Their beloved Ch & Aust Ch Tekalhaus Masterpiece Sh.CM has left them to cross The Rainbow Bridge. Maguire came from a repeat mating that also produced the kennel’s first champion Ch Tekelhaus Krugerrand. Sired by imported siemen from Gerhard Robinson’s Am Ch & SA Ch Siddachs Maestro To Nibelheim out of Tekalhaus Liquid Gold, he won his qualifying UK CCs all in 2006 under Di Moate at The DC of Wales, Jeff Crawford (Bournemouth) & Juliet Cooper (Great Joint DA) before leaving to Australia where he spent a short time with Judy & Alan Poulton gaining his title extremely quickly, in fact at his first show in Oz, The DC of New South Wales Speciality he was awarded Best In Show. Maguire returned ‘home’ in 2008 where he lived like all do at Tekelhaus as a much loved member of the household. Our sympathy to Debbie & Peter at this very sad time, I’m sure a great loss to them both.

Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 27/9/17

September 27, 2017
It sounds like the journey to Belfast from the mainland for many was eventful with delayed ferries by an average of two hours meaning a mad dash from the port to Belfast Showground. It sounds like everyone made their classes, if only by minutes to spare with all dogs & humans safe!

Belfast committee had made it clear that at this year’s event no scales would be used to weigh Miniature Dachshunds. All three varieties have CCs on offer & this year we did see an increase in the entry. If this was down to choice of judge, removing the scales or just word of mouth that Belfast is quite a unique show to attend with an atmosphere of its own, both new & seasoned exhibitors attended on the day.

Martin Sanders (Castelloch Hounds) had 23 Min Longs on the day awarding The BCC (her second) & BOB to Roy Wood’s Wildstar Wynnona JW with Roy’s Ch Wildstar Wrobinson taking The RDCC. Zara Boyle had an amazing day collecting the DCC (his first) & BP with Zarcrest Black Brewer who then went onto top the Hound Puppy Group under Stuart Milner (Dialynne Beagles). RBCC stayed on home ground with Gary McAlpine’s Lampcien Kween Kandy.

Longs had 6 dogs on show for Hans Van Den Berg from the Netherlands who awarded BB & BOB to Janet Geeson’s Ch Abydachs Giving Off Sparks handled as usual by daughter Helen. BD was Gerry McFaul’s Ir Ch shardaroba Fashion Flow At Dachville with Fran Mitchell’s Ch Bronia True Legacy taking RBD. RBB & BP was Emily Mitchell’s Bronia Supernatural who went onto Puppy Group Three under Stuart Milner.

The same day across the water in Wales, the DC of Wales held their Open Show with Welshman Steve Rose (Ridanflight Min Wires & Pointers) deciding the final awards. Best In Show was Sue & Jason Hunt’s Smooth Lauralee Miss Marple At Carpaccio with Jane Howell’s Min Wire Fallowmill Top Of The Class taking Reserve Best In Show. Best Puppy In Show was awarded to Annette Latham-Jackson’s Min Long Dolyharp Purcell Of Urishay with Mandy Dance’s Min Wire Emem All Het Up taking Best Veteran In Show. I hear all went well at the show with one ring in operation & friendly welcome & relaxed atmosphere. I’m sure the delicious food on offer would also have been an attraction for many too! Congratulations to all involved.

At Ashford, Faversham & DCS Open Show, Debbie Clarke’s Long Tekalhaus Diamond Life won Hound Puppy Group Three under Linda Aldous (Amudarya Afghan Hounds). At Birtley CS Lynne Bell’s Min Long Tolberg Cream Treat won the Hound Group, Hound Puppy Group & Best Puppy In Show at her very first show aged 6 months & 2 days all under Gaynor Jackson (Kirchilli Whippets), a truly amazing start to a show career!

Cindy Dare (Darsoms Longs) tells me that her partner Lew has been in hospital recently for surgery. Thankfully, Lew is now home recovering & both send thanks to everyone for their concern sending many messages & telephoning. Hopefully, Lew will take it easy over the next few weeks (though I doubt it somehow!) & then will be back to being the rock & support (staff!) to Cindy as I can only imagine her running herself into the ground as usual with the workload.

Driffield this weekend, CCs on offer for Min Longs & Longs scheduled without. Let me have your news please, phone, text, message or email. Any form of communication is accepted!

Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 21/9/17

September 21, 2017
Last Friday, both Darlington all breeds championship Show & the Northern Counties DA championship show held their first ever partnership shows together at Ripon Racecourse. I was saddened to miss both events but hear that everything went off very well.
At Darlington, we are lucky enough to have CCs on offer for both our varieties & this year one of our longest well established Smooth breeders judged them both. Margaret Turner (Marictur Smooths) judged 34 Longs on the day, awarding the DCC & BOB to Zara Boyle’s Ch Zarcrest Hugo Boss with Cindy Dare’s Ch Darsoms Zybrox taking the RDCC. Cindy also won BP with Swansford Lionellador Darsoms who made the final cut in the Hound Puppy Group under Lee Cox (Vanitonia Poodles). BCC was Lesley McNaughton’s Ch Cedavoch Circe with Irene Cook & Trish Rhodes’ Ch Bournder Ruby Empress taking the RBCC. BV in breed was Ken & Sandra Paskins’ Ch Abydachs Summer Dream at Kindeace Sh CM.
Margaret judged 67 Min Longs & awarded the DCC & BOB to Roy Wood’s Ch Wildstar Wrobinson. Christine McCarthy won the RDCC with Nagshall Justintime JW. BCC (her 2nd) was Lynn Brooks’ Lyndarlea Vienna with Lynne Bell’s Tolberg Legally blonde JW taking the RBCC. BP was Billy & Adam Rowell’s Emmajesk Masquerade with Anne Johnson’s Ch Charpurdy Just Iss taking BV.
In the afternoon, the NCDA had CCs on offer for Min Longs with Lloyd Cross (Loggeta Longs & Min Smooths) judging 50 dogs on the day. DCC & BOB was Roy Wood’s Ch Wildstar Wrobinson winning his second BOB in just a few hours & this time going onto Best In Show under one of Dachshunds’ leading ladies, Wendy Barrow (Frankanwen Longs). Lynn Brooks picked up the RDCC with Ch Lyndarlea Just Andy JW & taking her second BCC was Lynne Bell’s Tolberg Legally Blonde JW ShCM. Doug & Wendy Hall’s Cliffmere Levity was awarded the RBCC with Billy & Adam Rowell once again being awarded BP with Emmajesk Masquerade. BV was Mrs Green’s Eldmour Electra.
Evan Ryan (Cavalli & Cavallibrook Toys & Min Wires) judge Longs without CCs & had 18 to judge on the day. The Hutton family won BD, BV & BOB with Ch River Rumpus Through Dachalune ShCM. Liz Garlick’s Ranglewood’s cleared the rest of the major awards, RBD was Ranglewood Harvest Song, BB from Veteran was Ch Ranglewood Genista with RBB & BP going to Ranglewood Trick or Treat who went onto Reserve Best Puppy In Show under Wendy Barrow.
My spies tell me that the day stayed dry & that the showground & facilities on offer were second to none. As expected, a few teething issues were experienced on the day but secretary Michael Paget & his team assure everyone that these have been taken on board & already both societies are in talks on how to make their 2018 event even better for everyone. Congratulations to both clubs on this joint venture & I really hope I will be seeing them both next year!
Two forthcoming all breed championship shows have released their entry figures. At Driffield, 76 Min Longs are entered with CCs on offer with 17 Longs with out CCs. At South wales KA, 52 Min Longs are entered with CCs on offer & once again Longs are with out CCs & have an entry of 9.
At Worthing CS Open Show June Sutton’s Long Damai Master Benedict won Best Veteran In Show under Darren Clarke (Peluche Briards) & at the same show Debbie Clarke’s Longs Tekalhaus Million To One ShCM was Hound Group Three & her daughter Tekalhaus Diamond Life was Hound Puppy Group Four; both under Muriel Boydell (Warrenoak Afghan Hounds).
Peter Higgins (Leveliss smooth’s & Min Longs) had his place of work burgled over the weekend & amongst the items taken by the thieves was Peter’s Dachshund Club Loose Change Challenge tin which Peter & his colleagues fill over every 12 months in readiness to return to the DC at their championship show. Without doubt, theft of any kind is unforgivable, but theft of charity money is so wrong & unacceptable on all levels. Let’s hope all that was taken from Peter’s works is returned, including the Loose Change tin. This should also serve as a reminder to all who have tins to prepare them for their safe return to the DC championship show in November where you can be issued with a nice new shiny empty tin to look after for 12 months!
In Ireland, at Carlow all breeds Championship show, Gerry Mcfaul’s Long Ir Ch Shardaroba Fashion Flow At Dachville was awarded Best In Show under Mrs Gail Patterson having won the Hound Group under Mrs D Young-McCormack from America. Many congratulations on this outstanding win; you must be thrilled & so good to see a Dachshund taking the top spot at an all breeds championship show.
This weekend sees Belfast championship show where all miniatures have CCs on offer & as extensively advertised by the society they will not be weighed this year. The breed judge for Min Longs is Martin Sanders (Castelloch Longs & Whippets). Safe travels to all attending, without doubt a show with a unique friendly atmosphere that only the Irish can offer!

At Birmingham on the Saturday & Sunday, 2 sessions were held on each day for how the new Judges’ Competence Program will work. I attended on the Saturday when Jeff Horswell & Glen Dymock explained the new program and answered questions.  It was a good 2 hour session and I found it very good from being a Secretary of a breed club and a Judge and understand things a little more clearly now.
