Health and Welfare

The Dachshund Breed Council Health and Welfare Sub-committee works in partnership with The Kennel Club, The Animal Health Trust and other professional bodies for the improvement of the breed’s health and welfare.  We have a dedicated Health website which has all the latest news and information relating to Dachshund health in the UK.  Click on the image below to visit our Health site…

The site serves three purposes…

  • To provide information on Breed Health Plans and the most up-to-date health information of importance to Dachshund breeders and owners
  • To provide a place to report your Dachshund’s health conditions (and cause of death, including “Old Age”)
  • To summarise the latest data available from owners’ and breeders’ Health Reports submitted, plus other Breed Surveys

Dachshund information for prospective owners

Please visit our Health site to download information on our priority health conditions such as Back Disease, Cord1 PRA and Lafora Disease.

Visit our Welfare pages for information on more routine ownership matters such as keeping your Dachshund at a healthy body-weight, whether or not to breed, and whether or not to spay/neuter.
