Like a lot  of you I was sad to hear that Valerie Skinner had passed away, although Val set off with Std Longs it was Std Wires she was most known for. Val did a lot for Dachshunds for many years especially Dachshund Rescue and never took any money for all her hard work. She was President of the West Riding Dachshund Club, also a Vice President of the Dachshund Club, she was also the 2nd person to be given a Lifetime Achievement Award  by the Dachshund Club. Val was always very cheerful & chatty with everyone and when selling the raffle tickets at West Riding she would not let you escape before buying any.
Yet another great person to pass on over these last months. Valerie’s funeral is on Wed 18th April at Grenoside Crem, Sheffield S35 8RZ with refreshments later, please let Valerie’s niece know if you are going for refreshments on Email  sandy
Yvonne Kent has had a lovely start to the Easter weekend as at Edwinstowe open show
today at Newark showground, her min smooth Lokmadi Hidden Dragon won BOB. Her daughter Lokmadi Magic Dragon won BPIB, the judge was Kym Drady (min longs).
I hope you all have a lovely Easter weekend.

Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 28/3/18

March 29, 2018

Finally the clocks have changed here in the UK & British Summertime has officially started. How lovely it is to have the evenings lighter already which must benefit both us humans & our four-legged friends. Can you believe that we are already at the end of March? With the long Bank Holiday Easter weekend on the horizon, let’s hope we have seen the last of The Beast From The East & have more dry warmer Spring days that will start getting us motivated for the Summer months. A weekend in the garden is on most people’s to do lists for the long weekend ahead I’m sure.

The re-scheduled Southern Dachshund Association championship show was staged last Saturday at the Montem Leisure Centre in Slough. Because of the re-scheduled date, it was unfortunate that several varieties suffered from absentees which was a shame but understandable. The club’s new secretary Wendy Starkey did a great job for her first show in office, being well supported by the well established strong committee & band of helpers. Gillian Goad (Rosanport Smooth’s) decided the final awards with all BOB winners being called to the collecting ring by 2.30pm. For Best In Show from a strong lineup, Gill chose Daniel Roberts’ Long Ch Swansford Gemmadora with Roy Wood’s Min Long Ch Wildstar Wrobinson taking Reserve Best In Show. Best Puppy In Show was awarded to Lynda Adams’ Wire Wyldetarn Shoot From The Hip with Jason & Sue Hunt’s Smooth Carpaccio Silent Siren taking Reserve. Best Veteran in Show was awarded to Mrs West’s Min Smooth Archidax Bonneville.

Both our varieties had CCs on offer & Longs had a change of judge as Sue Holt was unable to fulfill her appointment on the re-scheduled date. Sallyann Elkington (Sutina Min Wires) kindly stepped in & awarded Gemmadora her fourth CC before going onto BOB & Best In Show. Daniel Roberts also won the DCC with her litter brother Swansford Grantador who was collecting his second CC. RDCC was Tony Johnson & Lloyd Cross’ Africandawns Night Lement with Janet Geeson’s Abydachs Miraval taking the RBCC. BP was Lloyd Cross’ Glasvey Double Trouble for Loggeta & Sarah Eve’s Dachslur Mairi My Dream Sundayshill was awarded Best Veteran In Breed.

Lady Lynda Billinghurst (Jiljac Min Wires & Secretary of the DC) was awarding CCs in Min Longs for the first time. Taking the RDCC behind Wrobinson was Maureen Poole’s Findowries Franchise. BCC (her first) was Carole Worswick’s Dolyharp Salut D’Amour with Helen Geeson collecting the RBCC with Abydachs Alohomora. Paul & Jan Phillips’ Summerview Yogi Bear was awarded BP & Best Veteran went to Penny Young’s Ch Willowheath Hendrix.

The very sad news reached many of us at the show that Valerie Skinner had passed away. Without any doubt, Val was one of the greatest characters I have encountered in Dachshunds. Her beautifully presented Ritterburg Wires were consistently outstanding. Before the Wires, Val owned Longs & her first Champion indeed was Ch Ritterburg Rhine Romanesque (1971) which was based on the breeding lines of Lynn Lloyd-Williams’ Lynocrees. The Wire Ch Flaming Kate At Ritterburg (1988) was certainly one of the top winning Wires of her time & a beautifully made bitch that I remember so well. Val’s hard work & dedication to Dachshunds especially through the Dachshund Breed Rescue together with the full support of husband John will never be forgotten. Never one to suffer fools, liars or cheats & had the greatest sense of humour. Full of Northern Spirit & one of the best judges you could witness in action; honest, fair & always the look of delight & satisfaction with her winners. Overall Val’s contribution to Dachshunds in the UK has seen decades of dedication, hard work, love & patience not go un-noticed & indeed the impact she has made on all varieties has been enormous. A true ambassador for everything that is right about our little world & her loss will, without doubt, be immense to everyone. Val Skinner’s funeral will be held on Wednesday 18th April at 2.10pm at Grenoside Crem, Sheffield, S35 8RZ afterwards all are welcome at the tea-room which is also on the site where the service is being held. It is family flowers only. Donations if desired will go to Davies Court Care Home. Val’s niece Shiela has asked if anyone who will be attending could send her an email so they have a good idea of numbers for later. Thank you. Please Email …

Ken Paskins (Kindeace Longs & Wires) had an unexpected admission to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness last weekend & following CT Scans Ken was operated on. Two days later Ken has returned home all ‘fixed’ & is now recovering. I’m sure the welcome Ken received from his four-legged gang was the best tonic to help him on his road to recovery & let’s hope it won’t be too long before we see him in action once again. Get well soon Ken!

If you’re out & about this weekend don’t forget to let me know how your Dachshunds get on, please. A call, email or text is always appreciated. Down under, Lloyd Cross, Simon Parsons & Mark Cocozza are all judging Dachshunds in Sydney this weekend & I gather Fran Mitchell has also gone over to watch all the events so hopefully, some news from all these events will filter through. Whatever you are up to, have a great bank holiday weekend & Happy Easter!

Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 21/3/18

March 22, 2018

For many societies, last weekend’s weather continued to bring problems. The snowfall across the country which started for many on Saturday morning went right through to Sunday evening with the south-west coming off the worst. Thankfully, this did not impact any Dachshund events & on Saturday the West Riding DA held a very successful open show with numerically one of their best ever entries. Seamus Dunne from Ireland judged Smooths, Longs & Min Smooths along with the final awards with Andrew Whitfield Roberts (Dandydayo) judging Wires, Min Longs, Min Wires & Varieties. Best In Show was awarded to John Bennett’s Long Shardaroba Country File with Fay Hutchings’ Wire Tendrow I Am The One From Collidach JW taking Reserve Best In Show. Best Puppy In Show was awarded to Sue Holt’s Min Wire Waldmeister Jonah with the Min Smooth Carey’s Donnadoon Dark Moonbeam taking Reserve Best Puppy In Show. Anne Moore & Linda Coverley’s Wire Ch/Ir Ch Ex Sentia I’m James Bond was awarded Best Veteran In Show. Congratulations to everyone on making this show a success.

Best Veteran in Breed was declared for the first time this year at Crufts. In Min Longs Sharon Broad’s Neertanauf Sea Magic JW ShCM came out on top & in Longs understandably Emily Mitchell’s Ch Bronia Lotario was Best Veteran after taking BOB. It does make sense to award a Best Veteran In Breed at the world’s most famous dog show but how did you feel about Reserve Best In Show being declared before the ultimate Crufts Best In Show? I think it did take us all by surprise.

This Saturday sees the re-scheduled Southern Dachshund Association Championship Show taking place & in the early hours of Sunday morning British Summer Time officially starts so don’t forget to alter your clocks, especially if you have a show on Sunday. The Wire Club & the Hound Association Open Show are both taking place in Coventry at the Sports Connexion. The entry for the Hound Show is 8 Longs, 6 Min Longs, 4 Smooth, 38 Min Smooth, 11 Wire & 20 Min Wires. Dachshunds are first in ring 4 for judge Richard Bott (Quensha/Allene).

Looking through Fosse & Higham I can see that we are in for a few weeks where entries are closing. It’s certainly going to be expensive, several breed clubs & several all breed championship shows close online so getting checking to avoid disappointment. Many societies have made it clear that this year no online entry extensions will be made so if you want to attend a show don’t take the risk of relying on an extension. The Scottish DC, Hound Association of Scotland, the Long Haired Club, Birmingham National & SKC (May) are all due to close very soon & although neither of our varieties is classified at WELKS if you wanted to enter I’m afraid you may have missed it.

The AGM season is also upon us with several clubs already having had theirs. The Midland DC, Long Haired Club, West Of England DA & Eastern Counties DA have all given notice & AGM agendas. Please try to support your clubs & committees by attending & if you feel you can give a little something back please don’t be afraid to offer!

Katherine Herrington’s Smooth Dachshund Breed Notes 15/3/18

March 15, 2018
Certain parts of the country got more snow the Wed/ Thursday before Crufts & the first day of Crufts being the Thursday, fortunately, I don’t think it stopped anyone attending.

The Smooth Haired Club have extended their closing date another week  to 24th March/18.

Lots of other shows entries are coming up to their closing dates so watch out if there are any you really want to go to.

Daniel Roberts’ Long Haired Dachshund Breed Notes 14th March 2018

March 15, 2018

Another crazy, hectic & highly enjoyable Crufts is over for another year. The morning of Friday 9th March thankfully gave us all a dry day for entering & exiting the NEC in Birmingham & with no sign of the dreaded white stuff that we had experienced in the 10 days leading up to the world’s greatest dog show, we all managed from near & far to attend without any major hassle.

This is always the ideal opportunity to meet up with friends from near & far, especially from around the globe. It should also be a time to enjoy seeing the cream of each breed compete for top awards & as always you expect competition to be tough. Who would have thought the eventual Reserve Best In Show Winner would have very close Dachshund connections?

Jill Peak (Bayard Beagles & wife of the late Trevor Peak who had the Arvornary Smooth Dachshunds) had the honour of selecting the final winners on Sunday night, awarding the runner-up spot to Heather Bennett’s Pointer Sh Ch Kanix Chilli who was handled by Mother Joanne Blackburn-Bennett (Shardagang Dachshunds & daughter of Ellen Blackburn ((Stargang)) & Daughter In Law of John Bennett ((Shardaroba)). Bred by Sigurd & Kari Wilberg (Kanix Dachshunds) it leaves no doubt that the final of Crufts 2018 had a connection we should all be proud of & many congratulations to all involved on such a lifelong memorable result.

Back to the breed rings & Min Longs were blessed with a Royal Visitor when HRH Prince Michael Of Kent stopped by to have a chat with exhibitors & meet some of our four-legged friends. 129 Min Longs awaited Derek Smith (Clickham Collies & President of the Midland DC). Roy Wood had another day that we all dream about, winning both CCs for the second year running. BCC & BOB was Ch Wildstar Wynnona JW with the DCC going to Ch Wildstar Wrobinson. The RDCC was Sue & Roger Roberts’ Ch Ralines Rob Roy To Denver with Emily Mitchell’s Ch Bronia Peach Fuzz taking the RBCC. Lynn Bell’s Tolberg Cream Treat was awarded Best Puppy being handled by Adam Rowell.

Lesley McNaughton (Cedavoch Longs & Smooths) attracted 86 Longs which were judged third in the ring following Finnish Spitz & Elkhounds. This made it a long day with judging not finishing before 5pm which certainly was no fault of our judge who had been informed that she was commencing judging much later than anticipated due to the two previous breeds in the ring running over. DCC & BOB from veteran was Emily Mitchell’s Ch Bronia Lotario JW who also made the final cut in a fabulous Hound Group under Albert Wight. Daniel Roberts had a day to remember winning the BCC (her third) with Swansford Gemmadora & the RDCC with Ch Swansford Warrador. The RBCC & BP was awarded to Lloyd Cross’s Glasvey Double Trouble For Loggeta. Not long now until Lloyd flies out to Australia to judge the National Dachshund Specialty in Sydney where I’m sure he will have an amazing time & will without doubt fill us all in on his return. Swansford Gemmadora’s title not only makes the second Swansford Champion this year but makes a magical 60th English Champion for the kennel, an achievement that Margaret Swann would be absolutely delighted with I’m sure & certainly gave a tear or two to someone’s eye!

As usual, the Discover Dogs Arena was packed to capacity on all four days & Ian Smith co-ordinated a truly fabulous job on behalf of the Midland DC where all the booths not only looked very smart & brightly decorated but contained the right information for the public to see & take away with them. Many thanks from everyone to all the two & four legged volunteers over the four days who deliver one of the most important services to the public in our canine calender. Just before we close on Crufts, next year Hounds fall on a Saturday & your 2019 breed judges are Gerry McFaul (Dachville Longs) for longs & Sue Roberts (Denver Min longs & Min Smooths) for Min Longs; it’s less than 12 months away now!

You should all now be well aware that the postponed Southern DA Championship Show that was cancelled on Saturday 3rd March has now been scheduled to take place on Saturday 24th March. All the details for the original show stand, entries in age classes etc. the venue is the same, the Montem Leisure Centre in Slough SL1 2QG. Unfortunately, the change of date means Sue Holt has had to withdraw from her Long appointment where she has attracted a very good entry & would have been her first time judging this variety . Sallyann Elkington (Sutina Min Wires) will replace Sue on the day to judge Longs with all the other judges being able to fulfill their appointments.

Poor Maxine Wood has certainly been in the wars, slipping on ice resulted in a fractured Femur & Knee which meant a hospital stay with surgery. After bones being pinned & plaster applied, Maxine will be out of action for at least 8 weeks. Her close friend Margaret Wilson (Rogermardax Longs) has kept us updated via Facebook & I’m sure we all wish Maxine a speedy recovery & send our love & best wishes to her. Let’s hope all goes well & that we see you soon Maxine!

Ruth Lockett-Walters tells me that Ralines Royal Rebel of Sweetwell, owned by Allison Cronje in South Africa attended his fifth championship show & completed his South African title taking BOB too. Bred by Ruth & daughter Helen, he is by Barlaines Black Prince out of Ch Ralines Popping Kandi. Many congratulations.

This weekend sees the West Riding DA open show at the Speedwell Rooms in Chesterfield which I’m told has drawn a fantastic entry for Seamus Dunne from Ireland & Andrew Whitfield-Roberts (Dandydayo Min Longs).

A very special weekend too as Len Hammond (Glenmorris Min Longs) reaches his 90th Birthday. I speak to Len every week & keep him updated on the Dachshund world. Although not in the best of health, Len is always keen to get the news & pass on his opinions. I’m sure that Len would love to hear from any of you, either a phone call or card would certainly be well received.
