Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 1/3/18

March 1, 2018

Without doubt ‘The Beast From The East’ is doing its upmost to impact this coming weekend’s canine activities. I’m sure that all of you will have witnessed some white stuff & felt the extreme cold temperatures. For Dachshunds, this means that the Southern Dachshund Association has taken the decision to postpone their championship show scheduled for this Saturday 3rd March. I’m sure this has certainly not been taken lightly & the final decision has been taken based on fact & advice from official sources. The snowfall has already appeared in Slough and the South West & the Midlands is set to worsen in the next few days. The SDA is now in talks with the venue to find an alternative date (24th March). Having served on a committee that had to postpone a show due to snow I can only sympathise with the SDA & I’m sure a sensible solution will be reached. Please take a moment to think about the extra workload involved with this decision that has been made for your safety & more importantly the safety of our Dachshunds!

Last weekend, the Dachshund Club staged its open show & AGM. On all accounts , the AGM went very well & this was followed by the club’s annual trophy awards. The Jackdaw Trophy for the most outstanding Dachshund of 2017 was awarded to Roy Wood’s Min Long Ch Wildstar Wrobinson with the Amyass Biss & Bob Gale Trophy for runner-up going to Judith & Morris Armstrong’s Smooth Ch Lauralee Nicholas Nickleby who was also awarded the Friedl Cup for Top Smooth. Roy’s Wrobinson also collected the Ena Bassett Memorial Trophy & the Chris Leyshon Trophy for Top Miniature. Chris Moes & Rhian Williams won the Marriners Trophy for Top Smooth Bitch with Ch Cwmdarhian Hot Off The Press. The Lankelly Black Bryony Memorial Trophy for Top Wire went to Kim & Duncan McCalmont’s Ch Silvae Solo. Finally the Molly Raine Memorial Trophy which is awarded to a youngster or beginner in the breed showing great promise was awarded to young Amelie Smith who has made such a great mark already showing her family’s Min Wires. Many congratulations to all the winners.

Back to the open show which received a great entry throughout. John Thirwell (Ferndel Gundogs) made the final decisions awarding Best In Show to Sue & Jason Hunt’s Min Smooth Carpaccio Midnight Lace with Cindy Dare’s Long Darsoms Zamson taking Reserve Best In Show. For Best Puppy In Show John chose Lynda Adams’ Wire Wyldetarn Shoot From The Hip, such a great win for Lynda showing her first Wire after much success with Champions in Weimaraners & Pointers. Daniel Roberts’ Long Darsoms Zardonnay Swansford was awarded Reserve Best Puppy In Show attending her first show. Katharine Herrington’s evergreen Min Smooth Ch Kathington Coeur De Lion was awarded Best Veteran In Show.

The evening before the Dachshund Club, Lloyd Cross attended the East Anglian Super Match with Tony Johnson after his Long, Glasvey Double Trouble For Loggetta, qualified after winning several puppy groups in 2017, including Best Puppy In Show at the Hound Club Of East Anglia under Simon Parsons. On all accounts, a great evening was had by all with Double Trouble winning her rounds & eventually only being beaten by the overall winner. I’m sure I did see that Lloyd & Tony won the award for Best Dressed Couple on the night too & very dapper indeed they both looked!

The Scottish Dachshund Club are hosting a Breed Seminar & Mentoring Session at Middleton Village Hall, EH23 4QU on Sunday 15th April, the day after the Hound association of Scotland Championship Show. The morning session & Breed Standard will be presented by Lesley McNaughton (Cedavoch Longs & Smooths) with the chance of taking the Dachshund Breed Council multiple choice exam. A buffet lunch & afternoon mentoring session will take place with the total cost of the day just £15 or £10 without the exam. All enquiries to express your interest as soon as possible please as numbers are limited; by e-mail to benjcroft.web@btinternet.com quoting SDC Seminar in the subject field. A booking form will then be sent to you.

The latest Kennel Journal gives us a few confirmed judges. For 2018 Mandy Dance Min Longs at Driffield, Nora Price Min Longs at Midland Counties. For 2019 Robin Searle Longs at Blackpool, Carol Daykin Longs at the Houndshow, Jenny Startup Min Longs at Darlington, Tom Johnston Longs at Bournemouth, Carolyne Scott Longs at the DC of Wales & Christine Sheppard Min Longs at the same show. At South Wales KA in 2020 Birgit Hayward will judge Min Longs.

This time next week, with any luck, the snow will have gone leaving all roads clear as we head to the NEC for the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts. As usual, both our varieties will be judged in Hall 4 with Min Longs on their own in ring 23 & Longs third in the ring following Finnish Spitz & Norwegian Elkhounds in ring 24. Safe journey to everyone & don’t forget to catch me with your news or message me via messenger or even text.

The only all-breed success I have to report is Lynne Bell’s Min Long Tolberg Cream Treat, handled by Adam Rowell winning the Hound Group & Hound Puppy Group at Billingham Synthonia open show under Emily Mitchell (Bronia Longs).

Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 22/02/18

February 22, 2018

This Saturday 24th February sees the Dachshund Club open show & AGM taking place at the Sports Hall, Sports Connexion at Ryton On Dunsmore, Coventry. The AGM for all paid up members will start at 10am with open show judging commencing at 11am prompt. Secretary Lynda Billinghurst reports a good entry too with 32 Smooths for Paul Hayes, 69 Min Smooths for Pauline Kerslake, 22 Longs for Minna Hagan, 29 Min Longs for Sandra Palin, 34 Wires for Muriel Locksmith & 43 Min Wires for Rodney Locksmith. John Thirlwell (Ferndel gundogs) will judge the veteran classes & Best In Show.

Lynda also tells me that on Sunday 22nd April the Dachshund Club will also be hosting a day with Jeff Horswell on the Judges Competency Framework & what it will mean to breed clubs especially. All Dachshund Breed Clubs have been invited to send committee members to this event & few limited number of places are available to non-committee members if you would wish to attend. I’ve seen a few presentations on the new framework & if you want to gain some knowledge on how this will impact you or your breed club then this is the ideal opportunity to find out. For more details see Lynda at this weekend’s show or contact her by phone 07477098928 or email jiljac01@hotmail.com. Once each breed club has confirmed their attendance the remaining seats will be strictly on a first come basis.

The AGM season is well & truly with us & last weekend the Southern Dachshund Association held their annual event. After 10 years as secretary, Sue Ergis decided to retire from her position. Without doubt, Sue has had the club’s affairs in order over her period in office & has done an amazing job on behalf of the society, I’m sure Sue will enjoy her retirement & life in her new home having recently moved house. Former committee member & show manager Wendy Starkey was elected as the new secretary with Gina Salisbury continuing as assistant secretary.

The entry for their forthcoming championship show on Saturday 3rd March at the Montem Leisure Centre is 37 smooths, 47 Longs, 57 Min Longs, 57 Min smooths, 20 Wires & 17 Min Wires (the last three varieties don’t have CCs on offer).

Last weekend also had the Northern Counties Dachshund Association hold their open show & AGM. A new secretary for them too as Michael Paget has retired & Lynne Bell was elected into the role. The open show attracted 95 Dachshunds for Rob Wheeler to judge. The only news that has filtered through is Fran Mitchell’s Smooth Cedavoch Solar Storm At Bronia was awarded Best In Show.

Jean Hallett has been having a rough time health-wise recently resulting in several hospital stays & visits. It’s always lovely catching up with Jean & chatting on the phone last weekend she tells me that she feels much better & hopefully heading in the right direction now health-wise. Jean will be joining everyone at the Midland DC championship show in July where she is delighted to be judging Best In Show.

Understandably, Jean will be missing Crufts this year but indeed hopes to catch up with everyone very soon. If you’re ever in need of some good no nonsense northern dog talk pick up the phone & give her a ring, I’m sure Jean will be delighted to hear from you!

Congratulations to Claire Kennedy on the birth of a beautiful new daughter Thea Iris who is a new baby sister for Cora. Mum, baby & husband Paul are all doing well & are now home with the four legged family. It’s certainly lovely to have some much needed good news & welcome a new member to our Dachshund community!

Wendy Hall tells me that she has had her Min Long Cliffmere Levity x-rayed under the Dachshund Breed Council’s IVDD screening scheme. Taking advantage of the special offer from the BC, Wendy says that the whole experience for dog & owner was stress-free & well organised from the word go with nothing being too much trouble. The Vets & nurses involved were extremely helpful & genuinely  interested in the scheme. Once the x-rays had been taken they were submitted to the IVDD specialist in Finland to be scored & recently Wendy was delighted that Levity’s score was confirmed as ‘Zero Calcifications’ for IVDD which is a perfect result. If anyone has any questions about the journey taken for IVDD screening for dog & owner then take a few minutes to chat with Wendy as she can’t speak highly enough of the scheme & will be more than happy to answer you questions & give you the facts of what’s involved.

With Crufts around the corner there is still just enough time to get your vote in for the Pawscars Awards where our very own Will Harris (Zarcrest Longs) is a finalist for Canine Photographer of The Year. Links for voting are on the Pawscars website & links through all social media formats. I’m sure you will have seen many photographs that Will has taken over the years & indeed although its fabulous that Will is a finalist, it would be great to see him walk away as the winner.

Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 15/02/18

February 15, 2018

The latest Kennel Club Breed Record Supplement has been published. This is for the period October to December 2017. 70 new Long Haired registrations & 248 new Min Long registrations were received for this period. Once again, Miniature Smooths were the number one Hound breed with registrations standing at 1,680 for this period. The total Long registrations for 2017 are 210 which is the highest recorded in over ten years. The Min Long total stands at 1,027 which is the highest recorded since 2010. Min Smooths are in the top ten leaderboard for all breed registrations & for 2017 a total of 5,735 were registered which is the highest ever recorded in one year for this variety.

Back to Longs, for October to December 12 litters were recorded with 66 new registrations. Amongst the colours registered in these litters were Chocolate, Chocolate Dapples & a Shaded Cream (which I can only presume will end up a Clear Red). Three new imports, two from Lithuania & one from Russia.

Michael Lewis’ Trixhund Opium has had his Junior Warrant & Show Certificate of Merit confirmed.

Miniature Longs had 72 new litters recorded with 245 new registrations. The usual & unusual (now accepted) colours are registered through varying degrees. The Dapple colours registered range from Chocolate Dapple & Cream to Cream Dapple. The size of litters recorded seems more uniform too with no litters of eight or nine puppies registered! Three new Imports, one from the USA & two from Russia. Three new Champions confirmed, Ch Ralines Flirtini, Ch Ralines Rob Roy To Denver & Ch Wildstar Wynnona. Three new Junior Warrant holders too, Emmajesk Masquerade for the Rowell family, Lyndarlea Vienna for Lynn Brooks & Nagshall Just Lucamac for Christine McCarthy.

The Miniature Dachshund Club held their well-supported Championship Show at the Sports Connexion, Coventry last weekend where Roz Rawson (Rosenket Smooths & Longs) decided the final awards. Best In Show was Michael Pagget & Gary Carroll’s Marvale Up With The Lark who gained his title on the day. Reserve Best In Show was Emily Mitchell’s Min Long Metadale Coco Chanel Of Bronia. Best Puppy In Show was awarded to Andrea Callow’s Min Smooth Garthorne Grace Kelly with Maureen Poole’s Min Long Findowrie Mr Bumble taking Reserve Best Puppy In Show. Yvonne Kent’s Min Smooth Ch Barratini Jeeves at Lokmadi JW was awarded Best Veteran In Show.

Adam Rowell (Emmajesk Miniature’s) had attracted a healthy number of Min Longs & it was Coco Chanel’s second CC. Maureen’s Mr Bumble was not only Best Puppy but was also awarded his first Dog CC. Reserve DCC was Lynn Brooks’ Ch Lyndarlea Just Andy & RBCC was Edward Allen’s Penparc Creme Caramel. Anne Johnson’s Ch Charpurdy Just Iss was Best Veteran In Breed. I managed to call in just as Limit Bitch was being judged, I was attending the Tibetan Spaniel Association AGM which was just a couple of miles away! It was lovely to catch up with so many ‘Mini’ friends & watch Roz judge the final awards, looking so well & as glamorous as ever. Cindy Dare (Darsoms) thoroughly enjoyed her Min Smooth judging & was clearly pleased to see her final winners go on to take the top three awards. A lovely atmosphere with so many staying to the end which seems a rarity these days

Secretary of the Eastern Counties DA Minna Hagan tells me that schedules for the club’s open show in June are now available with online entry on Fosse Data. The club’s AGM will also be held on the same day, Sunday 3rd June after the completion of the open show. All the details for both events are also on the club’s website & if you require a printed schedule through the post please contact the ECDA show manager Trevor Watkins.

More sad news comes from the Minard household of Trevor, Stephanie & Jeremy Goddard. Ch Minard A Girl Like Me has crossed Rainbow Bridge at 16 years of age. One of three Champion bitches from one litter by Ruth Lockett-Walters Ralines Royal Spartan x Mullion Bensons Lilly Of Minard, she won her qualifying CCs under Jean Lanning, Mike Caple & Sally Ann Elkington (as a veteran). Her litter sisters were Ian Blackshaw’s Ch Minard She’s a Peach at Ravenways & of course their very own Ch Minard Krystal Darque who remains the aall-timeDachshund CC record holder with 71 CCs. Obviously a mating that worked with three Champion girls who gave so much pleasure to many & I know how proud the Minard family are of them all, with A Girl Like Me gaining her title as a veteran, due to her sister’s success in many ways, it shows that quality & care can last & continue to win at any age. Our thoughts are with you all again at this very sad time.

Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 7/2/18

February 7, 2018

For the first time this year, both our varieties had CCs on offer at the same show. Last weekend, all roads headed to Cwmbran in Wales where the Dachshund Club of Wales hosted their last championship show at Cwmbran Stadium before their first partnership championship show event at the Welsh Kennel Club in August 2019. Secretary Judith Armstrong & her hard-working committee made everyone welcome & the show ran smoothly in a very relaxed atmosphere. WKC Secretary & Hound specialist Graham Hill (Dimland Borzois) decided the final awards, with Sue & Jason Hunt’s Min Smooth Carpaccio Midnight Lace taking Best In Show with Cindy Dare’s newly crowned Long Swansford Lionellador Darsoms taking Reserve Best In Show. Helen Geeson handled her mother Janet’s Long Abydachs Kumala to Best Puppy In Show with Mrs Warren’s Wire Waggington Manhatton Of Wagsford taking Reserve Best Puppy In Show. Linda Coverley’s Wire Ch/IR Ch Aventine Shaken Not Stirred was awarded Best Veteran In Show. All judging was completed by 2.30pm which gave everyone plenty of time to get on the road home with some daylight driving.

Katherine Herrington (Kathington Min Smooths) was awarding CCs in Longs with her next judging appointment being Min Smooths at Crufts which I’m sure she is very much looking forward too. DCC (his third) & BOB from the Junior class was Cindy Dare’s Swansford Lionellador Darsoms with Zara Boyle’s Ch Zarcrest Hugo Boss taking the RDCC. BCC (her second) was Daniel Roberts’ Swansford Gemmadora with Tony Johnson & Lloyd Cross’ Africandawns Night Wizzard taking the RBCC. Best Puppy was Janet Geeson’s Abydachs Kumala with Glenda Marks taking Best Veteran with Ch Brynalyn Royal Warrior Via Labbadax ShCM.

Mike Turner (Rafthouse Min Longs & Smooths) was awarding CCs in Min Longs with Helen Walters’ Ch Ralines Flirtini taking the BCC & BOB. Mum Ruth Walters & Helen’s Crisp Fall Night At Ralines was awarded the RBCC. DCC (his first) was Peter & Annette Latham-Jackson’s Dolyharp Purcell Of Urishay with Peter Higgins’ Ralines Just Jewels taking the RDCC. BP was Tony Johnson’s Africandawns Just Divine & Jo Norris was awarded Best Veteran with Xemxiji Star Struck at Criscan.

With the beginning of a new month, we all had the latest edition of the Dachshund Breed Council E-News drop in our inbox. Full of updates which includes the results of the Dachshund Of The Year which was staged last month. Details of a ‘Silent Auction’ for the car number plate SS09 AGE, to help raise funds for the IVDD screening program. The auction ends at Midnight on Sunday 11th February so you need to be quick with your bid; e-mail it to info@dachshund-ivdd.uk. The amazing limited offer for getting your Dachshund x-rayed for IVDD for just £100 has been extended. If your dog is between 24 & 48 months old, check out the website on how to apply for this very limited (7 very generous) offer thanks to all the fundraising events that have taken place. A group titled ‘Walks Against IVDD’ has certainly attracted lots of interest with monthly walks that are open to all dog walkers anywhere in the country. Dawn Branley organises these events with the links for information on the BC website. The annual health report from the BC makes informative reading & this month’s newsletter contains some of the highlights from the 2017 report which covers IVDD, Lafora Disease, Cord1 PRA, Eye Disease, Lymphoma, Pes Varus,Longevityy & the BC Health Fund. Another great edition to start another new month.

At the Hound Club Of Northern Ireland open show, Gerry McFaul’s Long Ir Ch Shardaroba’s Fashion Flow At Dachville was awarded Best In Show under Sandra Johnson (Burnvale Basset Hounds). At the Isle Of Ely open show Margaret Wilson’s Long Puppy Bonavior Senorita At Rogermardax won the Hound Puppy Group under Karen Simkin (Simeldaka Beagles). Congratulations both on a great weekend.

The eagerly awaited Crufts entry figures have been released. Lesley McNaughton (Cedavoch Longs & Smooths) has attracted 86 Longs which is three up on last year & Midland DC President Derek Smith (Clickham Collies) has attracted 129 Min Longs which is nine down on last year. Min Longs have their own ring but Longs follow 15 Finnish Spitz & 46 Elkhounds, being third in the ring. Judging times are still to be confirmed. Katherine Herrington’s 187 Min Smooth entry will certainly keep her busy all day! I will keep you all posted as we get more information.

It’s fair to say that we are all shocked & deeply saddened by the death of Charles Lewis-Crooks. Not enjoying the best of health in recent years, Charles was certainly a character & proudly campaigned his Wire Ch Barmaud Rufus to many great wins. A friend to everyone, always laughing & a smile for everyone. I’m sure the likes of Sue Holt who travelled to many shows with Charles will have many stories to tell. Details of funeral arrangements are still to be announced but we are assured that all of Charles’ animals are all being cared for. A very sad time, a great fun loving character & friend has been taken from us. Rest In Peace Charles……
