Neurology Seminar at Fitzpatrick Referrals 26/1/14

January 26, 2014

Around 30 people attended today’s Neurology Seminar hosted by Fitzpatrick Referrals in Surrey. It was a great day, with really informative presentations by Clare Rusbridge and Rowena Packer.  Clare talked in the morning about Epilepsy and Lafora’s Disease and in the afternoon about IVDD.  Rowena presented her PhD research into the welfare impacts of Dachshund conformation.  Attendees were also treated to a tour of the practice during the lunch break.

These are among our “hot topics” from a health perspective, so it was good to get strong veterinary and research perspectives presented in “plain English”.

The seminar was introduced by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick who made us very welcome and shared his passion for treating the “whole dog”. Fitzpatrick Referrals was founded in 1997 by Noel whose vision was to create an environment where it would be truly possible to marry compassionate care with excellence in veterinary medicine; a place which would allow the exchange of ideas rapidly and efficiently between human and animal medicine for the benefit of all; a place where it would be possible to push the boundaries of veterinary medicine to allow animals to regain pain free functional quality of life.

Fitzpatrick’s typically treats one Dachshund per week for back disease and has been helping to collect DNA samples from their clinical cases to help with our IVDD research project.  Clare Rusbridge is a key advisor to the Wirehaired Dachshund Club on Lafora Disease and is the UK’s leading expert on this condition.

A full report on the seminar will be made available for download.

We were also pleased that 21 Mini Wires came along to have blood taken for Lafora Screening.

Breed Seminar and A2 Assessment: 14th September

August 9, 2013

The Great Joint Dachshund Association will be holding a Breed Seminar and A2 Assessment event on Saturday 14th September 2013.

The Seminar is an ideal opportunity to learn about Dachshunds, whatever your current knowledge and experience. The speaker will be Ian Seath (Sunsong Wires) who will talk about the Breed Standard and conformation and movement.

For those who meet the UK Dachshund Clubs’ criteria, there will be an opportunity to be assessed and, if successful, have your name put forward for the UK Dachshund A2 Judging List when you have met all the other relevant criteria. The assessments will take place in the afternoon and those people attending just the seminar may stay to watch, if they wish.

All participants can choose to sit the Breed Council’s Written Assessment Paper which forms part of the A2 approval criteria. The Written Paper will be available during the afternoon and there is a Pass Mark of 70%.

The venue is Chieveley Village Hall, High Street, Chieveley, Newbury, RG20 8TE. This is easy to find, just off the M4/A34 and is a venue already used for dog club events.

Download a Booking Form: GJDA Booking Form 140913

Read about the A2 Assessment process.  To be assessed at this event you must have already judged at least 150 Dachshunds.
